Columbus vs. Caldwell

The Columbus Cardinals are coming off a 1 point loss to Huffman and face the Caldwell Hornets in their first district game of the year.  The Cardinals are trying to get district play started off right with a win on Homecoming Night.

The game started off with the Hornets striking first with a 62 yard touchdown run.  Columbus couldn’t get much going in the first quarter, but their defense stood strong and didn’t let Caldwell score again in the first quarter.

7-0 Caldwell to start the second quarter.  Columbus tied it up with a 3 yard run by Pflughaupt with 8:30 left in the second.  It looked as if the Cardinals got their pep back and the big homecoming crowd was behind them.  Unfortunately the Cardinals gave up two touchdowns in the second quarter.  A 15 yard run and a 22 yard pass.  The Cardinals went into half time down 21-7.

Congratulations to 2016 Homecoming King William Sanchez and Homecoming Queen Hannah Orange.

The third quarter started out slow and was a defensive battle, but with 2:01 left in the third Bubak ran one in from 3 yards out to put the score at 21-14 Caldwell.  That TD got the defense pumped up and the Hornets offense couldn’t get going.  The Cardinals had the Hornets deep in their own field with about 8 minutes left in the quarter.  The Hornets went for a run and the back reversed the field in their own end zone.  The Cardinal defense was swarming and Baugh tackled the Hornet for a safety.  Everyone goes wild.  Due to it being a safety the Cardinals will get 2 points and receive the kick off.  Cardinals only down 5 with 7:36 left.  Unfortunately the Cardinals fumbled the kick return and never got any momentum back.

The game ended Caldwell 21 Columbus 16.

The two biggest things the Cardinals need to work on is their passing game and winning the turnover battle.  If they can turn these two things around I believe the Cardinals will get their first district win this week against Gonzales.  The Cardinals will play the Gonzales Apaches in Gonzales on Friday October 14 at 7:30 pm.
