Columbus vs. Gonzales

The Columbus Cardinals are coming off a tough 5 point loss to Caldwell on Homecoming Night in Columbus and face the Gonzales Apaches in Gonzales.  The Cardinals are looking to get their first District win of the season against the Apaches.

The game started out with both defenses playing well and making the offenses struggle to gain momentum.  The first quarter was scoreless.  In the second quarter both defenses played well while the offenses continued to struggle.  Gonzales scored with a 29 yard TD run in the second.  The Cardinals did not have an answer and went into halftime down 7-0.

The Cardinals came out of halftime looking to turn things around.  The defense played great holding the Apaches scoreless in the 3rd and Geisler had an interception.  Columbus scored on a 7 yd TD pass from Pflughaupt to Carter.

Going into the fourth quarter it was all tied up 7-7.  They did have change of pace when they put in Evans who is quick and can spread the field.  Other than that offensively the Cardinals just couldn’t get the momentum that they needed.  When Columbus had a chance to get momentum they refs were there to make sure we did not.  Sometimes you get the calls sometimes you don’t.  In this case there were 2 huge missed calls that really stalled the Cardinals.  A fourth down play that was ruled a catch for Gonzales that should have been an incomplete pass/fumble.  Gonzales fumbled the ball but they called a face mask penalty on us that keep their momentum going.  Even with all of this going on the Cardinals still showed tremendous fight.  The Apaches were driving towards the end of the game and Estrada and Hurd defended and broke up the pass in the end zone and on the tip Baugh came away with the interception to give the Cardinals the ball  Unfortunately the Apaches scored late in the fourth and the Cardinals lost 14-7.

Bubak was taken out in the middle of the game due to a shoulder injury.  No update on the injury, but he should be ready to play this Friday against La Grange.

The Cardinals are 1-6 overall this season and 0-2 in District play.

The Cardinals will play the La Grange Leopards in Columbus on Friday October 21 at 7:30 pm.
