Columbus vs. Hallettsville
The Columbus Cardinals were coming off their first win of the year against Sealy and faced the Hallettsville Brahmas. Hallettsville is ranked 5th in 3A football rankings. This game was great from start to finish. The Cardinals held Hallettsville to only 7 points in the first half. The only problem was that Hallettsville held Columbus to 0 in the first half.
The Cardinals came out in the second half looking to score and score they did. Columbus tied the game up 7-7 less than 2 minutes into the 2nd half with a TD Run by Pfluaghpt. The Brahmas then matched with their own TD to put the Brahmas up 14-7. The rest of the third quarter was a defensive battle. Half way through the fourth quarter the score was still 14-7 Hallettsville. Then Hurd burst a 60 yard TD run to tie the game back up at 14 a piece. Hallettsville once again answered with a TD pass of their own with only 3:54 left in the ball game. Hurd didn’t need much time again scoring on a 66 yd touchdown to tie the game up at 21 a piece. The Cardinals played tough D and with 16 seconds left in the game Hallettsville scored on a 50 yd pass to go up 28-21. The receiver seemed to be a bit handsy, but there was no call. The Cardinals had one last try to tie the game up. Geisler came in to throw the long ball, but his pass was tipped by the Cardinals and eventually intercepted and the game was over.
The Cardinals looked good coming off their win with Sealy. They are progressing each week and I look forward to District Play. If the Cardinals continue to show this type of poise, grit and explosive running abilities, I see a playoff run in our future.
The Cardinals will play the Cuero Gobblers in Cuero on Friday, September 23, 2016 @ 7:30.
