Columbus vs. Bay City Football
The Columbus Cardinals started the 2016 football season off vs Bay City at Memorial Stadium in Columbus. The game was a defensive battle from the start. Both offenses could not get much going and there were a ton of flags flying. There were a total of 23 (Bay City 17 – Columbus 6) penalty flags for 195 yards. The Cardinals have had less than a month to work with the new offense from Bonewald, so we knew there was going to be a learning curve.
The Cardinals defense forced 2 fumbles and recovered both. For the most part Columbus held Bay City in check. Bay City had an overall quick squad. Since the offense never got much going, the defense was on the field more than anticipated. That was the main reason Bay City had a big play here and there, which was a difference in the game. Unfortunately the Cardinals lost 12-0.
The Cardinals fought till the end and never let down. Down 12-0 in the 4th, Senior Levi Gustus blocked and recovered and extra point attempt. That play there showed the intensity, heart and determination the Cardinals had, even though they were down two scores in the 4th quarter. Moments later Gustus was tackling a receiver and injured himself. It was later reported that Gustus broke his collarbone and had surgery the next day. He will be out for an indeterminable amount of time. Best of luck to Gustus in his recovery.
The Cardinals have a bye week and then will go on to face the Sealy Tigers at Memorial Stadium on Friday, September 9th. I look to see major improvements on both sides of the ball, given the players and staff have an extra week to work.
