The Columbus Minor League Softball All Stars are State Champs!
The journey started on June 25th, 2016 in Weimar, Texas when the Columbus All Stars defeated Grimes County. That journey ended with a state championship in a defeat of Huffman 4-0 on July 18th, 2016. During that span the Columbus All Stars went 11-1 outscoring their opponents 136-30. 8 of the 12 wins were less than 6 innings due to run ruling the other team. They had an amazing combination of both offense and great pitching.
The Columbus All Stars had 4 different pitchers throughout the tournaments led by Alina Houghland. Houghland pitched and started in 10 games going an impressive 9-1 with 55 K’s. The other three pitchers were Karlee Mathis, Madyson Carter and Kayli Alley. Carter and Alley came in for relief of Houghland when Columbus had the games at hand. Mathis started 2 games, one being a gem in the State Championship game where she pitched a complete game shut out to win the title.
Offensively the Columbus All Stars were phenomenal. They scored 136 runs in 12 games with a team batting average of .546. They had a total of 7 home runs with Kayli Alley, Madyson Carter and Karlee Mathis each hitting one over the fence. Carter and Mathis hit theirs in the State Tournament.
The Columbus All Stars were very sound offensively and defensively due to a lot of hard work, practice and great coaching. The team was led by Manager Brandon Mathis, Assistant Coach Kristi Carter and Assistant Coach Rodney Gustus. With the talent that was shown both on and off the field, these young ladies have a very bright future.
